CASE STUDY:

Security Accident & Incident Logistics (SAIL) Soars in Achieving Accuracy

CUSTOMER:
TASK:
Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT)
Software Development, Mobile Technology

Customer Mission:

DDOT’s mission is to provide public transit services that are reliable, clean, customer-focused, safe, and secure. The safety of its public transit passengers is paramount, and the DDOT must continually improve safety and security across its transit services. DDOT strives to capture incident and accident information for immediate response to protect riders and to develop solutions to mitigate future occurrences.

The Challenge:

The DOL’s CHARGEBACK system maintains the interface with the state systems to process and transfer compensation to meet beneficiary obligations for affected former Federal employees. Since the system was written in legacy 1990 character code, it could not accommodate changes to Federal regulations. Additionally, although CHARGEBACK contains 15 major subsystems, the 4GL programming language was only capable of a single relay at a time, resulting in slow processing.

Alesig's Solution:

DDOT engaged Alesig to analyze and evaluate its current systems and identify desired efficiencies. In alignment with the Agency’s emphasis on the safety and security of transit passengers, we recommended, designed, and developed the Security Accident & Incident Logistics application. SAIL allows real-time data collection at the scene of an accident or security incident via a tablet device. We configured SAIL to capture data such as photographs, GPS coordinates, and mapping information using mobile technology, and enabled the app to transmit captured data immediately to the Agency. Using mobile technology, our approach reduces errors in data collection, eliminates redundancy, and enables automated alerts. Additionally, manual reporting and paperwork processing were significantly minimized, allowing Agency personnel and transit police to focus on more important concerns. SAIL also provides data reporting for trend analysis and features an offline mode in the event of a network connectivity issue.

We also applied Green IT techniques by coupling the application with cloud computing technologies. As a result, Alesig drastically reduced data communication and storage costs by minimizing IT hardware and eliminating needed floor space for the assets. We also achieved service and operational cost efficiencies for DDOT.

Benefits:

  • >70% reduction in manual reporting and paperwork processing, leading to increased staff productivity
  • >99% data reporting accuracy, a significant increase over manual reporting
  • Increased emergency response time for First Responders
  • Increased security of data through smart validation checks
  • Elimination of redundant data entry and human error
  • Reduced operational costs through implementation of Green IT initiatives
